Medio centenar de activistas de AI y miembros del grupo teatral Terra Nova, vestidos de color naranja, se concentraron ante la Embajada estadounidense en Copenhague.
Más de cinco años después de estar con él por última vez, la madre y el hermano de Omar Deghayes, uno de los cerca de 400 presos de la base estadounidense de Guantánamo, defienden a las puertas del enclave militar su derecho a un juicio.
La organización humanitaria Amnistía Internacional (AI) entregó siete mil firmas en la Embajada de EU en Dinamarca para pedir el cierre del centro de detención en su base de Guantánamo (Cuba), en el quinto aniversario de la llegada de prisioneros a ese lugar.
Unas 200 personas, entre ellas familiares de detenidos marroquíes en la base estadounidense de Guantánamo, participaron en una manifestación ante el sede de Naciones Unidas en Rabat para pedir el cierre de ese presidio y la liberación de los detenidos.
Estados Unidos llama a los detenidos “combatientes enemigos ilegales”, un término que se inventó y que ha usado para negarles acceso a cualquier Tribunal, así como la protección de las Convenciones de Ginebra, que rigen el trato a los prisioneros de guerra.
El Gobierno de EU continúa defendiendo su poder para mantener a esas personas allí y restringir su acceso a la justicia.
En cambio, Chito Peppler, un portavoz del Pentágono, reiteró que la existencia de Guantánamo ha permitido obtener información de los detenidos, la cual “ha salvado las vidas” de soldados estadounidenses y ha permitido frustrar “amenazas” contra civiles.
Y en Londres veinte manifestantes se congregaron frente a la representación diplomática estadounidense vestidos con los “overoles” color naranja que usan los prisioneros de Guantánamo, esposados y con la boca cubierta.
En Madrid, la organización humanitaria Amnistía Internacional entregó 150 mil firmas a la embajada de EU para pedir el cierre de Guantánamo.
En Cuba, marchó hasta las cercanías de la prisión una delegación integrada por Cindy Sheehan, cuyo hijo murió en Irak y que es la pacifista más conocida en EU, por un ex preso y los familiares de otro que lleva desde 2002 en esa cárcel.
En Washington, cien personas fueron detenidas por protestas dentro de un Tribunal federal, aunque tenían un permiso para manifestarse en la calle.
Manifestantes en todo el mundo demandaron la clausura de la prisión, abierta en la base naval estadounidense en Cuba después de la invasión de Afganistán para recluir a presuntos miembros del régimen Talibán o de la red terrorista Al Qaeda.
Se cumplieron cinco años desde que los primeros detenidos llegaron a Guantánamo, donde 395 presos siguen encarcelados de forma indefinida, lo que ha renovado las llamadas al Gobierno de Estados Unidos para que cierre la prisión.
