Lady Gaga arrasó en la ceremonia de los Premios MTV a los Videos Musicales, mientras The Weeknd se llevó el máximo honor. Ambos astros enviaron mensajes importantes a los espectadores sobre la situación actual del mundo: "Usen tapabocas" y "Justicia para Jacob Blake y Breonna Taylor".

The Weeknd, quien ofreció el primer número musical de la noche, rindió homenaje a Blake y Taylor (dos personas negras que murieron tras ser baleadas por agentes de policía) al ganar los premios al video del año y mejor R&B por Blinding Lights.

Los VMAs comenzaron con unas sentidas palabras en memoria del astro de Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, a quien la anfitriona Keke Palmer dijo que el evento estaba dedicado.
Los Black Eyed Peas, que cerraron el evento de más de dos horas con Nicky Jam y Tyga, terminaron su actuación diciendo: Black Lives Matter. La estrella de R&B H.E.R. ganó el premio al video para el bien por su himno de protesta sobre la brutalidad policial y el racismo sistemático, I Can't Breathe.

Pero la mayor parte del espectáculo estuvo dedicado a las actuaciones divertidas - algunas pregrabadas, algunas filmadas desde distintas locaciones de Nueva York.
El grupo de K-pop BTS, que obtuvo reconocimientos como mejor pop y mejor grupo, ofreció una actuación pregrabada de primera, y como acostumbra con buena coreografía. La banda de siete miembros bailó y cantó en elegantes trajes, por momentos con Times Square de fondo.

Los VMAs, que originalmente iban a realizarse en el Barclays Center en Brooklyn, incluyeron al cantante colombiano Maluma (galardonado con el premio al mejor video latino) cantando desde Brooklyn, mientras que The Weeknd actuó desde Manhattan.
DaBaby, acompañado por el equipo de baile Jabbawockeez, interpretó un medley de éxitos que incluyeron Rock Star, que rapeó saltando sobre una patrulla policial, con una ciudad en llamas como fondo. Doja Cat, nombrada mejor artista nueva, ofreció un número futurista de sus éxitos Say So y Like That.
