El "Curiosity" es el vehículo del Laboratorio de Ciencias Marcianas (MSL, por su sigla en inglés), equipado para responder a las preguntas sobre si hubo o persisten en Marte los componentes orgánicos de la vida, y cuánta agua líquida contuvo el planeta en el pasado.
El Sistema de Observación Ambiental de "Curiosity" medirá las temperaturas del aire y el suelo, la velocidad y dirección de los vientos, la presión atmosférica, la humedad y la radiación ultravioleta alrededor del artefacto explorador.
Entre las tareas del conjunto de instrumentos del Análisis de Muestras de Marte (SAM, por su sigla en inglés) se cuentan la búsqueda de componentes orgánicos, esto es, moléculas basadas en el carbono que son los elementos con los que se construyen las formas de vida que conocemos.
La tarea que "Curiosity" llevará a cabo luego podría revolucionar el conocimiento humano sobre Marte.
Un cohete Atlas V erguido en la plataforma 41 de la Base de la Fuerza Aérea de Cabo Cañaveral, en Florida (EU), encendió sus poderosos motores, atravesó el manto de nubes y propulsó a la cápsula en cuyo seno viaja "Curiosity" a más de 24,000 kilómetros por hora.
"Curiosity", el robot mejor equipado hasta la fecha para la exploración espacial, inició una travesía de 9.65 millones de kilómetros que realizará en busca de respuestas sobre la vida en Marte.
