Poco más de mil 400 vuelos fueron cancelados solamente en los tres principales aeropuertos que atienden la zona metropolitana de la ciudad de Nueva York.
El tráfico ferroviario, incluido el del tren que facilita el acceso a JFK o el transporte a ciudades cercanas como Boston, permanece suspendido.
En algunos lugares se ha llegado a acumular más de medio metro de nieve y por ello las escenas de gente desenterrando vehículos y despejando calzadas se han repetido en toda la isla de Mahattan.
Más de 500 pasajeros estuvieron siete horas atrapados en un tren de la línea de metro A, que une la zona del aeropuerto de JFK con Manhattan.
Los aeropuertos de JFK y Newark se vieron obligados a suspender sus operaciones el domingo y La Guardia en la pasada madrugada.
El tren estaba repleto de pasajeros hambrientos y sedientos procedentes del JFK que en su mayoría ya habían pasado horas tratando de acceder a esa línea de metro, ya que prácticamente no había taxis ni autobuses en las terminales.
Apenas se veían vehículos por las grandes avenidas que atraviesan la isla y pocos eran los transeúntes que se aventuraban a tratar de llegar a pie a sus puestos de trabajo, afectados también por un fuerte viento helado.
La Oficina de Gestión de Emergencias exhortó a la gente a permanecer en casa y a usar el transporte público y extremar la precaución en caso de no poder hacerlo.
La nevada ha obligado a cerrar los tres principales aeropuertos de la ciudad, cancelar prácticamente todo el servicio ferroviario y reducir al mínimo el tráfico rodado.
Miles de neoyorquinos y turistas quedaron hoy atrapados en casas, aeropuertos y hasta trenes a causa de una gran nevada.
