Surcoreanos realizaron un minuto de silencio tras el ataque a la isla Yeonpyeong.
En un comunicado, un portavoz de la Casa Presidencial de Corea del Sur advirtió hoy de que otro incidente similar tendría una "dura represalia" y que "no se pueden tolerar más ataques con artillería contra civiles".
El general Lee Hong-ki, de la Junta de Jefes del Estado Mayor surcoreano, calificó de "premeditado" el ataque norcoreano y dijo que la respuesta militar de Corea del Sur posiblemente causó "daños significativos" al Ejército norcoreano.
Este ha sido uno de los incidentes más graves entre las dos Coreas desde que en 1953 un armisticio puso fin a la guerra que los enfrentó desde 1950.
Los residentes fueron evacuados inmediatamente a refugios, mientras que el Ejército surcoreano fue puesto en la máxima alerta pensada para tiempo de paz y desplegó cazas de combate en la zona.
El balance hasta el momento es de dos marines surcoreanos muertos y 15 militares y cuatro civiles heridos de diversa consideración, de los que al menos cinco soldados están graves, según las autoridades de Seúl.
Los proyectiles sumieron a la isla de Yeonpyeong, que se encuentra en plena frontera marítima entre las dos Coreas, en el caos, al prender fuego a decenas de casas y producir un gran apagón.
Según fuentes militares surcoreanas, el ataque comenzó a las 14.34 hora local (05.34 GMT) y se prologó durante algo más de dos horas en las que los proyectiles de artillería norcoreanos cayeron en la isla surcoreana de Yeonpyeong, habitada por 1.700 civiles.
El régimen comunista norcoreano acusa por su parte a Corea del Sur de disparar primero y lo amenazó con más ataques "sin piedad" en caso de que persistan los ejercicios militares en la zona, escenario de enfrentamientos armados entre ambos países en 1999, 2002 y 2009.
El Gobierno de Seúl calificó de "clara provocación militar" el lanzamiento de al menos cien disparos de artillería de Corea del Norte sobre una isla habitada surcoreana cerca de la tensa frontera en el Mar Amarillo (Mar Occidental), que fueron contestados por otros 80 obuses de Corea del Sur.
Un ataque por sorpresa de Corea del Norte contra una isla surcoreana causó hoy dos bajas militares a Corea del Sur, en uno de los peores incidentes entre los dos países vecinos y enemigos desde el final de la Guerra de Corea en 1953.
