La celebración generalmente tiene por temática todo lo que es verde e irlandés; ambos, cristianos y no cristianos celebran la fiesta regularmente vistiéndose de verde, disfrutando de la gastronomía irlandesa la cual incluye col y bebidas irlandesas, y asistiendo a desfiles.
En algunos establecimientos se puede apreciar que se vende cerveza teñida verde para la festividad.
En el pasado reciente, el Día de San Patricio era celebrado solamente como una fiesta religiosa.
El primer desfile del Día de San Patricio se realizó en el Estado Libre de Irlanda, en la ciudad de Dublín en 1931 y fue revisado por el entonces Ministro de Defensa Desmond Fitzgerald.
El desfile del Día de San Patricio se celebró por primera vez en la ciudad de Nueva York el 17 de marzo de 1762 cuando los soldados irlandeses marcharon a través de la ciudad.
El Día de San Patricio se celebra a nivel mundial por todos los irlandeses e incluso muchas veces por gente que no tiene ascendencia irlandesa.
El Día de San Patricio (Irlandés Lá 'le Pádraig o también Lá Fhéile Pádraig) es el día festivo que anualmente celebra a San Patricio (386-493), el santo patrón de Irlanda, el 17 de marzo.
Este año Irlanda está haciendo un esfuerzo especial por presentarse como un destino turístico, en momentos en los que el país atraviesa una de las peores recesiones desde la Gran Depresión.
Entre las usuales comparsas musicales estadounidenses y héroes deportivos irlandeses, se mezclaban grupos teatrales africanos y de la India, bandas de Austria y Francia, insectos flotantes gigantes de España y dublineses bailando con mopas y plumeros.
En la Casa Blanca, donde el presidente Barack Obama se reunía con el primer ministro irlandés, Brian Cowen, se esperaba un ambiente festivo y, a la vez, cargado de política.
El tema de la marcha festiva 'El Mundo Extraordinario' celebró el creciente multiculturalismo de Irlanda, así como el despliegue mundial de irlandeses.
Más de medio millón de personas recorrieron los 3 kilómetros (2 millas) del tradicional desfile en Dublín, bajo cielos inusualmente azules para estas tierras acostumbradas a la lluvia y el viento.
36 millones de estadounidenses dicen tener antepasados irlandeses.
Otras multitudes se concentraban en Dublín y otras ciudades del país.
Hasta 250 mil personas marcharon por la Quinta Avenida de Manhattan en el desfile más antiguo y grande que se realiza en el día de San Patricio.
Las danzas en Dublín y los desfiles en Nueva York, repletos de personas en faldas escocesas y pintura corporal verde, encabezaron celebraciones mundiales por el día de San Patricio.
