Kennedy tuvo que superar una reputación de joven frívolo y privilegiado para llegar a convertirse en una singular figura en la historia estadunidense que tocó muchas vidas.
'Ted' fue gran opositor de las guerras de Vietnam y de Irak.
Kennedy abrazó las causas de los pobres y de los que están en desventaja como los inmigrantes, durante su carrera de 46 años como legislador.
Edward M. Kennedy, el 'león Liberal' del Senado, fue miembro de una de las familias más carismáticas y aristócratas en Estados Unidos y dedicó su vida al servicio público en retribución, tras reconocerse privilegiado.
Funcionarios de Naciones Unidas (ONU) lamentaron la muerte del senador estadounidense, al tiempo que elogiaron su defensa de los principios del derecho internacional y de las personas más vulnerables en el mundo.
Kennedy también influyó en la política exterior y fue uno de los más acérrimos opositores a la guerra en Irak bajo el Gobierno de George W. Bush.
Obama lamentó la muerte de "un gran líder" y el fin de "un importante capítulo de nuestra historia".
Las feministas también lloran su muerte, ya que, según la presidenta de la Organización Nacional para las Mujeres, Terry O'Neill, Kennedy "fue un defensor de las mujeres, los niños y los marginados, y estaba comprometido con nivelar el terreno para todos, especialmente los que han sido privados del Sueño Americano".
Fue Kennedy quien salió a defender a los musulmanes, satanizados tras los atentados de 2001, y quien abogó por su inclusión en el diálogo político nacional, dijo el Consejo sobre Relaciones Estadounidenses-Islámicas.
Su primera gran victoria legislativa en 1965 fue la de eliminar las cuotas de visas que regían entonces para países no europeos.
La comunidad hispana ha perdido a un amigo y aliado, tomando en cuenta que Kennedy fue un eterno creyente de abrir las puertas a los inmigrantes, refugiados y asilados, y fue uno de los arquitectos de la fallida reforma migratoria de 2007.
Kennedy fue clave en leyes que dieron paso "a las mayores reformas de nuestro establecimiento militar y de defensa desde el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial", según el asesor de Seguridad Nacional James Jones.
Kennedy, el menor de nueve hermanos, jamás llegó a la Presidencia -algo que en 1980 parecía inevitable-, pero ese "fracaso" fue irónicamente lo que le permitió convertirse en el más influyente de los senadores.
El legado de Kennedy tras 47 años de carrera política es tan grande como lo será su ausencia en el Senado, enfrascado en un enconado debate sobre la mayor reforma de salud en la historia reciente de EU.
La clase política e incontables grupos cívicos expresan un sentido adiós al patriarca de los Kennedy, quien falleció en su hogar en Hyannis Port (Massachusetts), a los 77 años, debido a un cáncer cerebral.
El senador Edward Kennedy, deja con su muerte una huella indeleble en la vida nacional, por su rara mezcla de idealismo y pragmatismo y su capacidad de forjar alianzas con rivales, afirmaron expertos.
