La investigación incluyó la participación de 200 agentes y fue coordinada con otras agencias federales como la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones (FBI), el Servicio Interno de Rentas, la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza y el Servicio de Alguaciles.
La operación también se decomisaron 149 vehículos, tres aeronaves, tres buques y 169 armas.
Agentes estadounidenses indicaron que entre los arrestados figuran lugartenientes de la alta jerarquía del cártel que tenían contacto con los cabecillas de la organización en México.
Leonhart enumeró un aumento de 104 por ciento en el precio de la cocaína, una reducción en la pobreza de la droga de casi 35 por ciento y una reducción del mercado en los Estados Unidos.
La administradora en funciones de la DEA, Michelle Leonhart, dijo que se trata de un duro golpe contra el cártel y señaló que el alza en los precios de la cocaína en Estados Unidos muestra el impacto de la ofensiva mexicana contra estas organizaciones delictivas.
Fueron arrestados específicamente 52 individuos en los estados de California, Minnesota y Maryland, para un total de 755 a lo largo de toda la operación.
La Operación "Xcellerator" inició hace 21 meses y concluyó en esta fase con el arresto de los presuntos integrantes del cártel que incluyen a ciudadanos mexicanos, canadienses, tailandeses y estadounidenses.
El procurador general estadunidense Eric Holder, quien la víspera se reunió aquí con el procurador mexicano Eduardo Medina Mora, destacó en rueda de prensa el resultado de la operación "Xcellerator" y los esfuerzos de cooperación con México en la lucha contra las drogas.
El Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos anunció hoy el arresto de 755 integrantes del mexicano cártel de las drogas de Sinaloa y el decomiso de 23 toneladas de drogas y 59 millones de dólares en efectivo.
