Alex Chamberlain dijo que un pistolero de 22 ó 23 años movió a entre 30 y 40 personas del restaurante a la escalera y le ordenó a todos que alzasen los brazos. Dijo que el pistolero hablaba hindi o urdu.
Los pistoleros que irrumpieron en el Taj Mahal "estaban buscando extranjeros. Ellos gritaban una y otra vez: '¿Quién tiene pasaporte estadounidense o británico?' ", dijo Ashok Patel, un ciudadano británico que escapó del hotel.
El motivo de los ataques no estaba claro de inmediato, pero Mumbai ha sido blanco frecuente de ataques terroristas atribuidos a extremistas islámicos, incluyendo una serie de explosiones que mataron a 187 personas en julio del 2007.
Johnny Joseph, principal secretario del estado Maharashtra, del que Mumbai es la capital, dijo que la cifra de fallecidos podría subir aún más.
"Los terroristas han usado armas automáticas y en algunos lugares se han arrojado granadas. Los encuentros continúan y estamos tratando de derrotarlos (a los atacantes)", señaló Roy.
Horas después del primer ataque, A.N. Roy dijo que la policía seguía enfrentándose con los pistoleros.
Los pistoleros también atacaron un cuartel policial en el sur de Mumbai, donde se produjeron la mayoría de los ataques, que comenzaron el miércoles por la noche y continuaban el jueves por la mañana.
Los atacantes se centraron específicamente en británicos y estadounidenses, dijeron testigos. Los tiroteos es escucharon durante horas.
El ministro estatal del Interior, R.R. Patil, indicó que otros nueve fueron arrestados, pero no quiso dar más detalles.
El secretario estatal del Interior, Bipin Shrimali, dijo que cuatro hombres murieron en dos incidentes cuando intentaban darse a la fuga en automóviles.
Las autoridades indicaron que la policía mató a cuatro sospechosos y arrestó a nueve más.
La agencia noticiosa Press Trust of India dijo que el grupo Deccan Muyaedín, previamente desconocido, se adjudicó la responsabilidad por los ataques en correos electrónicos enviados a varios medios de comunicación.
Una explosión sacudió la madrugada del jueves el hotel Taj Mahal, seguida por un incendio.
Los atacantes tomaron rehenes occidentales en los hoteles de lujo Taj Mahal y Oberoi, dijo A.N. Roy, un alto funcionario policial de Mumbai.
Grupos de hombres fuertemente armados atacaron hoteles de lujo, un restaurante y una terminal ferroviaria atestada en por lo menos siete ataques coordinados que dejaron unos 119 muertos y 288 heridos en la capital financiera de la India.
