En uno de los mensajes que el asesino publicó en el internet, dijo: "Mataré a personas en Akihabara", y luego explicaba el método: "Quiero estrellar el vehículo y si queda inservible, usaré un cuchillo. Adiós a todos".
Para muchos japoneses, que se enorgullecen de vivir en un país con una de las tasas de asesinatos más bajas del mundo, la primera reacción fue de conmoción.
El periódico "Mainichi" informó de que Kato fue un estudiante aplicado que sacaba muy buenas notas, pero no pudo acudir a la Universidad que quería y cursó estudios de mecánica del automóvil.
La Policía indicó que el agresor llegó a una zona cercana a la estación de tren de Akihabara en una camioneta, con la que golpeó a varios peatones.
Las once personas heridas fueron trasladadas al hospital inmediatamente después del incidente, pero sólo diez de ellos, ocho hombres y dos mujeres, presentaban heridas de arma blanca.
Shunichi Jingu, un hombre de 26 años de edad, dijo: “Parecía que había sucedido un accidente de tráfico. Entonces el hombre salió de un vehículo y comenzó a acuchillar”.
Akihabara es un distrito de Tokio conocido por sus tiendas de electrónica y como un centro de cultura moderna, y atrae a muchos visitantes de Japón y del extranjero.
El comenzó a lanzar alaridos diciendo que faltaba su uniforme", dijo Namai a periodistas. "Cuando uno de sus colegas le consiguió un nuevo uniforme, él ya había abandonado el lugar, y nunca regresó".
La semana pasada, Kato perdió súbitamente control de su temperamento en su fábrica en Shizuoka, a unos 160 kilómetros (100 millas) al suroeste de Tokio, donde había estado trabajando desde noviembre, declaró el ejecutivo de la compañía Osamu Namai.
El asesino estaba claramente perturbado, según las crónicas periodísticas.
Posteriormente, en un mensaje enviado también por vía telefónica apenas 20 minutos antes de que estrellara la camioneta en Akihabara, Kato escribió: "Ha llegado el momento", agregaron los informes de prensa.
El incidente ocurrió en el séptimo aniversario de un ataque similar realizado por un hombre en la Escuela Elemental de Ikeda en la prefectura de Osaka el 8 de junio de 2001.
La Policía arrestó a Tomohiro Kato, de 25 años de edad, de la Prefectura de Shizuoka, y se le encontró el cuchillo que utilizó. “Vine a Akihabara a matar gente. Estoy cansado del mundo. Cualquiera estaba bien (para matar). Vine solo”, dijo el detenido, de acuerdo con Kyodo.
Según periódicos y la cadena de televisión NHK, horas previas a la matanza Kato dejó varios mensajes en un pizarrón electrónico en la internet, enviándolos a través de un teléfono celular.
“Él (Kato) saltó encima de un hombre al que había atropellado con su vehículo y lo apuñaló muchas veces. Caminando hacia la estación de Akihabara, atacó personas al azar”, dijo un testigo de 19 años.
De acuerdo con la Policía seis de las siete personas muertas eran varones de 19, 20, 29, 33, 47 y 74 años de edad, y la otra era una mujer de 21.
Tomohiro Kato estrelló una camioneta alquilada contra un grupo de transeúntes y luego saltó de ella, con un puñal, para acuchillar a 17 personas.
Numerosos dolientes depositaron flores y otros objetos en homenaje a los muertos en la intersección del distrito Akihabara donde un presunto desequilibrado mental asesinó a siete personas.
