Festejan en Tailandia al Elefante

Ambas especies tienen cinco uñas en las patas delanteras, pero en las traseras el elefante africano tiene sólo tres y el asiático cuatro.
La reproducción de estos animales puede ocurrir en cualquier época del año, cuando esto pasa, el elefante hembra tienen que ser separada del rebaño; el periodo de gestación dura entre 21 y 22 meses, y por lo general tienen sólo una cría.
Los elefantes comen en promedio 225 Kg. de vegetal al día y beben hasta 190 litros de agua.
El elefante africano tiene en su trompa dos prolongaciones digitiformes y el asiático una, estos tienen la frente abombada, el lomo arqueado y las orejas pequeñas en comparación con la cabeza, además de que los colmillos solamente están presentes en los machos; al contrario de los elefantes africanos, que es más alto, las orejas más grandes y ambos tienen colmillos.
La característica más notable de este animal, es su trompa, que es el resultado de la transformación del labio superior y de la nariz en un órgano alargado, muscular y carente de hueso.
Actualmente sólo hay en el mundo dos especies de elefantes, estos se encuentran en la India y en el sureste de Asia y en África hacia el sur de Shara.
Después llegó la hora de la comida, en la que los elefantes consumieron alrededor de ocho toneladas de fruta.
La fiesta comenzó con una pequeña ceremonia seguida de una demostración de pintura realizada en el momento por los mismos paquidermos.
Los conservacionistas aprovecharon el día para pedir más esfuerzo centrado en salvar a las especies y para proteger su hábitat. Los elefantes en Tailandia se encuentran en una situación preocupante, pues ya sólo quedan tres mil en todo el país.
Dos retratos de los candidatos a la presidencia de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama y Hillary Clinton, son mostrados a la entrada de un buffet libre para elefantes organizado para celebrar el Día Nacional del Elefante en la ciudad de Ayutthaya (Tailandia).
Max, posiblemente el elefante más alto de Tailandia (de 3.35 metros), tiene entre 60 y 70 años, tiene una pata rota y vive en el Parque Natural de los Elefantes, en el valle de Mae Tang (Tailandia). A Max le trajeron al parque en 2002, después de haber sido rescatado de una vida de esclavitud. Sufrío varias palizas y estaba permanentemente encadenado. Mientras pedía limosna con su dueño en la calle, fue arrollado por un camion de 18 ruedas y arrastrado 4.5 metros por el asfalto.
Tailandia celebró el Día Nacional del Elefante con un festejo al que asistieron alrededor de 400 personas, entre ellas varios monjes.
