La presidenta, que ha resistido ya a dos intentonas de golpe de Estado desde que asumió la presidencia en 2001, es cada vez más impopular, y pese a que durante su mandato la economía de Filipinas ha registrado un notable crecimiento.
Trillanes y Lim, sometidos a juicio por su implicación en el motín que tuvo lugar en 2003 y en el que participaron cerca de 300 oficiales, salieron esposados del hotel Península, del que sus huéspedes fueron desalojados apenas dos horas antes.
Los líderes rebeldes pretendían prolongar el motín todo el tiempo posible con el objetivo de conseguir el máximo apoyo popular y de grupos cívicos para llevar a cabo manifestaciones contra el Gobierno de Arroyo.
También soldados fuertemente armados y policías montaron controles en las principales carreteras del país para interceptar a posibles seguidores de los amotinados.
Treinta personas, que vestían ropas civiles, prestaron apoyo desde el exterior a los rebeldes.
En el hotel, los líderes rebeldes, que a primeras horas de la mañana abandonaron sin encontrar resistencia la sala del tribunal donde estaban siendo juzgados por rebelión, se entrevistaron en la segunda planta del hotel con sus asociados
Los dos líderes rebeldes y su grupo de soldados se atrincheraron en el hotel después de marchar por las principales calles de Makati, en las que en ocasiones gritaron consignas mediante las que pedían a la gente que retirara su apoyo a la presidenta filipina.
Un vehículo blindado derribó la puerta principal y el humo de los gases lacrimógenos disparados por las fuerzas especiales se extendieron por amplio el vestíbulo del hotel.
En el motín participaron cerca de una veintena de soldados armados con fusiles ametralladores M-16, que portaban en el hombro brazaletes rojos con la figura del sol.
Después de casi siete horas de desafío, el grupo de renegados encabezado por el senador y ex oficial del Ejército, Antonio Trillanes, y el general Danilo Lim, se rindió a las tropas que irrumpieron en el lujoso establecimiento hotelero.
Los rebeldes exigían la dimisión de la presidenta de Filipinas, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, a la que acusan de corrupción.
Las fuerzas de seguridad aplastaron el motín llevado a cabo por el grupo de militares atrincherados en un hotel de Makati, el distrito financiero de Manila, Filipinas.
