Esta operación de seguridad en la capital es considerada como la última oportunidad para tratar de evitar que Irak caiga en una guerra civil sectaria.
Este ataque pudo llevarse a cabo a pesar del fuerte operativo de seguridad montado desde hace dos meses por fuerzas de Estados Unidos e Irak en la capital iraquí, con la finalidad de detener la violencia insurgente y sectaria en Bagdad.
El río Tigris divide a Bagdad por la mitad y el puente Sarafiya es una vía clave del norte de la ciudad que frecuentemente es utilizada por autobuses y vehículos comerciales que viajan desde el centro de la ciudad a los mercados de la zona norte.
La policía trata de rescatar a más de 20 personas cuyos coches cayeron al Tigris tras desplomarse el puente, uno de los más antiguos de la ciudad. Hasta el momento ningún grupo se ha adjudicado el atentado.
El ataque fue realizado cuando numerosos vehículos cruzaban el puente, que comunica los barrios de Azamiyah (de mayoría sunnita) y Bab Al Muazam (habitado tanto por sunnitas como por shiitas), muchos de los cuales cayeron a las aguas del río.
El hecho ocurrió en el puente de Sarafiya, ubicado en el norte de Bagdad, cuando el atacante detonó los explosivos que llevaba en el camión y dañó uno de los soportes de la estructura, indicó la fuente policial a la prensa internacional.
Al menos 10 personas murieron y 26 más resultaron heridas en Bagdad al explotar un camión bomba, conducido por un suicida, en uno de los principales puentes que cruzan el río Tigris, informó la policía de Irak.
