El Gobierno indonesio no ha hecho ninguna solicitud oficial de colaboración, declaró en Ginebra la portavoz de la Oficina de Coordinación de Ayuda Humanitaria de la ONU (OCHA), Elizabeth Byrs.
Las inundaciones que afectan a Yakarta y a varias ciudades próximas suponen hasta la fecha pérdidas por valor de cuatro mil 100 billones de rupias (452 millones de dólares o 350 millones de euros), según cálculos preliminares oficiales.
Naciones Unidas afirmó que está preparada para proveer ayuda humanitaria y enviar uno de sus equipos especializados en desastres a Indonesia, apenas el Gobierno de ese país lo solicite, ante la magnitud de las inundaciones registradas en Yakarta y su periferia.
Los ambientalistas atribuyen la inundación anual a los desagües taponados, una inadecuada planificación urbana y la deforestación de las colinas al sur de la ciudad, a menudo para permitir la construcción de residencias de lujo.
Según la policía, la mayoría de los fallecidos murieron ahogados o electrocutados.
En la capital, funcionarios médicos dijeron que había escasez de alimentos para bebés, agua potable y medicamentos, y se informó de problemas de salud causados por la falta de higiene, incluyendo enfermedades dermatológicas.
Mientras tanto las lluvias desencadenaron un deslizamiento de tierra en un pueblo a 160 kilómetros al oeste de la capital que mató a seis personas, incluyendo un niño, dijo el jefe de policía de Banten, brigadier general Timur Pradopo.
Buena parte de los doce millones de habitantes todavía carecen de electricidad y agua corriente.
Las autoridades dijeron que las aguas habían cedido en algunas partes de Yakarta, pero que de 220 mil a 430 mil personas permanecían en refugios temporales. Las cifras dispares provienen de distintas agencias del Gobierno y por el momento no fue posible conciliarlas.
Por otra parte, las lluvias que cayeron elevaron el nivel de las aguas en zonas inundadas de la capital indonesia, mientras las autoridades advertían sobre el peligro de posibles enfermedades, tras inundaciones que han causado por lo menos 44 muertes.
Reina Sofía llegó a Indonesia con un mensaje de solidaridad y esperanza del pueblo español para las víctimas del "tsunami", y con quince millones de euros en microcréditos a disposición de los supervivientes de la catástrofe que asoló el sudeste asiático el 26 de diciembre de 2004.
