Los críticos del proyecto de la Cámara de Representantes han advertido que lo bloquearían en el Senado.
El representante republicano Tom Tancredo también descartó una eventual amnistía porque, dijo, es "una afrenta a la ley de Estados Unidos y a la tradición estadounidense de la inmigración legal".
Afirmó que era un ciudadano estadounidense que representaba a parientes que estaban ilegales en Estados Unidos.
Los manifestantes pidieron a los legisladores que ayuden a unos 11 millones de indocumentados a establecerse legalmente en el país.
Los manifestantes se unieron a las decenas de miles de personas que ya estaban congregadas en el centro comercial National Mall. La multitud reunida abarrotó cinco cuadras.
