Desfilan globos gigantes en NY
El carácter secular de la celebración hace que personas de todos los credos y nacionalidades participen en el evento.
Los distintos estados siguieron celebrando el día de Acción de Gracias en fechas dispares, hasta que en 1863 Abraham Lincoln eligió el último jueves de noviembre como fecha oficial.
En 1789, cuando George Washington fue designado el primer presidente de EEUU, eligió el 26 de noviembre como el día oficial de Acción de Gracias.
Los colonos sufrieron un duro invierno durante su primer año en el nuevo mundo. La buena cosecha del verano siguiente los llevó a organizar tres días de celebraciones para agradecer su cambio de fortuna. La festividad se repitió en otros asentamientos de colonos y pasó a convertirse en tradición.
Los excesos y reencuentros familiares del Día de Acción de Gracias se remontan al año 1620 cuando un grupo de colonos británicos cruzó el Atlántico a bordo del Mayflower y desembarcó en Plymouth, Nueva Inglaterra.
El rotativo recordó la fragilidad humana frente a catástrofes como el huracán "Katrina" y señala que "lo que tenemos en común con los primeros en celebrar esta fiesta es la sensación de seguridad en un mundo peligroso".
Por su parte el periódico "Newsday" aseguró en sus páginas de opinión que "los estadounidenses que están bajo techo y seguros en compañía de sus familias tienen mucho por lo que estar agradecidos".
La parálisis informativa que se respiró no impidió, sin embargo, que los medios locales se hiciesen eco de las actividades de un grupo de manifestantes antibelicistas que se desplazaron a las inmediaciones del rancho del presidente de EU, George W. Bush, en Texas para protestar por la guerra en Irak.
La comida típica incluye pavo, puré de patatas, salsa de arándanos, tarta de calabaza y bebidas varias.
El derroche consumista también deja lugar para el altruismo, capitaneado por iglesias y centros caritativos de todo el país, que sirven el tradicional menú de Acción de Gracias a miles de pobres y personas sin hogar.
En total, unos 60 millones de personas se desplazan estos días por las carreteras y cielos estadounidenses para reunirse con sus familiares y cumplir con un ritual que data de principios del siglo XVII, cuando los primeros colonos europeos inauguraron la tradición tras su llegada al nuevo mundo.
Según las directrices establecidas para esta celebración, los globos deben regresar a tierra si el viento alcanza los 37 kilómetros por hora.
La policía dice que todavía no ha podido establecer si el viento es el culpable de lo ocurrido.
El accidente recordó otro suceso similar durante el desfile de 1997 y en el que dos personas resultaron heridas cuando un globo se estrelló contra un poste en el Parque Central de Nueva York, debido a los fuertes vientos que soplaban ese día.
La policía no hizo público el nombre de las víctimas, que permanecen en situación estable.
La menor recibió atención médica en la sala de emergencias de un hospital por heridas menores en la cabeza y la mujer, en silla de ruedas, recibió seis puntos de sutura por un corte en la cabeza.
Una mujer de 26 años y una niña de 11 sufrieron lesiones ocasionadas por los materiales que se desprendieron de la farola, según la policía.
Las heridas fueron originadas por los trozos que se desprendieron de la farola tras el impacto del globo, según informa la prensa local, que cita a testigos oculares y a fuentes policiales.
El espectáculo se vio empañado por un incidente en el que resultaron heridas un par de personas a raíz del impacto de uno de los globos contra una farola.
Entre los hitos de la jornada destacó el desfile de globos gigantes del centro comercial Macy's, en Nueva York, una tradición que arrancó en 1924 y que sólo se interrumpió entre 1942 y 1944 con motivo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Estados Unidos celebró el día de Acción de Gracias, la fiesta nacional por excelencia, en la que los viajes y los excesos gastronómicos marcan una jornada con la que comienza la gran temporada de compras de fin de año.
