Los responsables del proyecto quieren asegurarse de que no existan contratiempos en el lanzamiento del Discovery a mediados de julio, el cual sería el primer viaje tripulado al espacio tras la desintegración del trasbordador Columbia hace dos años.
La semana pasada fue descubierta una pequeña grieta en el principal tren de aterrizaje del transbordador Atlantis y la NASA quiere estar segura de que el Discovery no tenga el mismo problema.
La acumulación de hielo y los fragmentos da espuma aislante, como el que causó en 2003 una grieta en el ala del "Columbia", son los mayores peligros para el tanque y los cohetes propulsores en el momento de partida del transbordador.
El nuevo depósito que se sujetará al "Discovery" está equipado con un sistema de calefacción diseñado para impedir que se forme hielo en su superficie en los momentos previos al lanzamiento.
Los responsables de la agencia espacial estadounidense decidieron también trasladar la nave desde la rampa de lanzamiento al gigantesco edificio de montaje de vehículos (VAB) de Cabo Cañaveral (Florida) para la realización de los trabajos, en una travesía de seis horas y media.
La misión será la primera misión de un transbordador desde que el "Columbia" se desintegró a su retorno a la Tierra en febrero de 2003.
Debido a varios problemas técnicos que podían afectar a la seguridad, la NASA anunció a finales de en abril retrasar el lanzamiento -previsto para este mes de mayo- hasta un período comprendido entre el 12 y el 31 de julio,
El transbordador espacial "Discovery" comenzó su lenta travesía desde la rampa de lanzamiento hasta un hangar en Cabo Cañaveral (EU), donde será equipado con depósito de combustible y cohetes de propulsión nuevos.
